Digital Democracy

Digital Democracy takes current technology and communications to help marginalized communities around the globe defend their rights. This means that their site must be able to handle everything from high spikes of traffic during peak times for new initiatives to e-commerce for donations.

Netlify simplified the workflow for Digital Democracy. By pairing us with site generator, Jekyll, the team is able to focus their time on the issues that matter most. Read more about how they did this.

A few words with Gregor from Digital Democracy...

Could you tell us a little bit about your project?
Netlify
The project is a non-profit website that has low regular traffic but needs to be able to cope with a sudden surge of traffic in response to a news item or a post going viral. It needs to be easy and free to maintain. Technically speaking: Our CSS is written in Sass and based on Zurb Foundation. Sass is compiled to CSS by Jekyll. The Javascript on the site is very simple and is concatenated by the Jekyll build. For images we have a custom pipeline that creates static versions at different fixed sizes of each image that is committed to the Github repo using github-image-resizer. When the website loads a custom script replaces images dynamically with the best size based on the screen width.

Why did you choose Netlify?
Netlify
We had been using Github pages combined with Cloudflare for CDN and HTTPS. Netlify simplified this pipeline and has a lot of useful features (building branches, password protection, more control over https, automatic purging of CDN cache) that we have started using or plan to use in the near future.
