A few words with Truc from Girl Develop It San Francisco...

Could you tell us about your project?
Netlify

Girl Develop It started in New York in 2010, and has since grown to include 56 chapters in cities throughout the United States. Today, we teach over 500 people every month. When Pamela Fox started the San Francisco chapter in 2012, she used the online curriculum that she had created on teaching-materials.org. Over the years since, the curriculum has been used for hundreds of workshops, and seen contributions from dozens of GDI teachers, TAs, students, and community volunteers.

Last year, we partnered with local meetup group SFHTML5 to recruit volunteer contributors in an organized hack session. This year, we’ve expanded the event to include other community-minded open source projects, and spread it over several events as Code for Good Week, which starts on Friday, July 28. We’re excited to spread the contributor love to other groups, and help introduce more people to the rewards of open source coding for good. We encourage anyone in the San Francisco area to attend, and even remote contributors can get involved online.

Why did you choose Netlify?
Netlify

Many of our students make their very first contributions to open source by improving the teaching-materials repo. In order to keep the code accessible to even the newest HTML newbie, we’ve avoided adding build tools to the repo. This means contributors can preview their changes locally without having to install software or use the command line. However, this also means that we don’t have an automated process for optimizing images or bundling and minifying CSS and JS. By switching to Netlify, we can take advantage of their automatic asset optimization without adding complexity to our codebase.

Probably the biggest factor influencing our decision was the Deploy Previews feature. Most of our curriculum is presented in slideshows using the Reveal.js library. In slides, text and image positioning is important, and not always easily predictable by looking at the code alone. Before Netlify, we would have to pull PR commits to our local machines to test changes before merging. Now all we have to do is click a link in the PR comments, and see the site exactly as it will be served, over https. This is a big help to us, but it also means that contributors can make single-file edits directly in the GitHub editor, and still get a live preview of their changes.
